An Innovative Descriptive Writing Module Featuring Tana Tidung Local Wisdom for Middle School Students

Abstract

The low level of descriptive writing skills among seventh-grade students at SMPN Terpadu Unggulan 1 Tana Tidung served as the primary impetus for this study, where 75% of students were found to have difficulty expressing ideas due to their reliance on textbooks that were less relevant to their local context. Based on this issue, the study aimed to develop an innovative instructional module entitled “Writing Descriptive Texts Based on Tana Tidung Local Wisdom” that is feasible for classroom use. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the systematic ADDIE development model. Data were collected through validation questionnaires involving subject-matter experts, local wisdom experts of Tana Tidung, practitioners, and field testing. The findings indicate that the developed module falls into the “Highly Feasible” category, with an expert validation score of 95%. In terms of usability, the module received positive responses, with a practicality level of 87.08% from students and a perfect score of 100% from teachers. The effectiveness test demonstrated significant results, with 100% classical mastery and an average student score of 84.73. In addition to improving academic achievement, the module was also proven to foster more independent learning habits and enhance students’ sense of pride in their local cultural identity.
